The Interdependent Fight -- Spherical Situation Awareness in the Groundfight

Excerpts of remarks as delivered to the Corps of Cadets, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. Sept. 14, 2006
We are seeing right now an historic evolution in maneuver warfare: to the Interdependent Fight, where long-duration mass on the ground can be exchanged for rapid massing of resources of awareness, of detection, and of instant communications to deliver concentrated and precision strike.
Interdependence arises from the literal interconnections across all of these domains, constantly, in the hands of unit-level warriors of each and every Service simultaneously. Interdependence goes beyond Joint. It is an evolutionary step upward.
This Interdependent Fight calls for exquisite situation awareness. We thought in the past in terms of 360-Degree Awareness. But I submit that the American Warrior has evolved. He's evolved to what I call Spherical Situation Awareness. This is a new term. It calls for a new Habit of Thought. It is the habit of taking a comprehensive, spherical view, at once vertical and horizontal, real-time and predictive, penetrating, yet defended; also in the cyber realm; eliminating as much as possible obstacles of terrain, weather, foliage, darkness, jamming and any defenses erected in any of these domains, all the means of surprise that provide cover and resources to the enemy, even buried objects and buried targets.
Most importantly, Spherical Situation Awareness delivers to the net the tools of precision fire, including fires measured to avoid innocent casualties, and to get instant feedback to all that are on the command net. The kill cycle can thus be cut to minutes and possibly seconds, from the detect to the assessment.
This is no panacea. The thinking enemy already finds ways to avoid massing, dodge our sensors and inflict casualties. A sober reminder is the recent notification of the passage of First Lt. Emily Perez, a former Brigade Cadet Sergeant Major who was killed in action in Iraq just this past week - Class of '05. And this is not Land Power versus Sea Power versus Air Power: we must fight Interdependently because we in fact are Interdependent. Only in combination we will root out and kill each enemy.
History that is written in the decades to come will celebrate your triumphs and honor the steadfastness and courage in your ranks. Your innovation in bringing the Interdependent Fight from text to battlefield will write that history.

An indelible image of courage, one lone protester facing down a tank in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, June 1989. He would become known simply as 'Tank Man' or 'The Unknown Rebel'. The massive student protests were brutally put down on June 4th when the Chinese army attacked with tanks and trucks, firing indescriminately at the unarmed protesters, killing and injuring thousands. The Unknown Rebel confronted the tank column next day as the army withdrew. Neither his identity nor his fate have ever been established, reported by some to have been executed, and by others to be still alive. This music comes from the CD 'Image Conscious', music loosely hung on enduring news images. Music and video by Plug.

- After WWII, USSR bewared of an arms warfare against USA because their political viewpoints were dissimilar. But it was not as foreseen when this war happened in my poor small country.
America was not successful to educate Vietnameses about Freedom. The lifestyles of two countries were too different - typical character of american culture is liberty, freedom, democracy; typical character of vietnamese culture is ceremony, ritual, conservative - USA never understand, America is also a country of the world, America is not the world.
- The ideal of Americans: The american young men at that time thought that they went to Vietnam for fighting against poverty, unjusty. And it was a civil war in Vietnam, they were just a combatant of the republic of South Vietnam. They called it vietnamese war (war of vietnameses).
- The ideal of Vietnameses: For 100 years was colonized by the French, the pride of Vietnamese people had lived with an opinion: "Vietnamese king is not Vietnamese leader, we belong to our country, but our country doesn't belong to us". They were afraid that this thing would happen again when France went, America came. So no way, this red blood, yellow skin nation let the white lead them once more time.
Their definition of Republic of South Vietnam: ""There were people against it, there would be people for it" is a simple thing". They thought that these people were just a good equipment to let America parachute into Vietnam. Most of them didn't approve that it was a civil war; with them it was one of American tacticses: "using Vietnameses to fight against Vietnameses".
In addition, USA paid 1,5 billion USD of France's war effort and France surely couldn't pay back after the battle of Ä?iện Biên Phủ, then America came into South Vietnam; this thing made Vietnameses people misunderstand that South Vietnam was the mortgage of France for paying America off, so they called it American war (war against Americans).
- It was a political war between communism and capitalism in Vietnam.
